Amikacin is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, especially those caused by gram-negative bacteria, including strains resistant to other antibiotics.
Each mL typically contains:
Amikacin Sulfate equivalent to 250 mg or 500 mg of Amikacin
Available in 2 mL or 2.5 mL ampoules or vials (e.g., 500 mg/2 mL).
Used to treat severe bacterial infections, including:
Sepsis
Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Lower respiratory tract infections (pneumonia)
Intra-abdominal infections
Skin and soft tissue infections
Post-surgical infections
Bone and joint infections
Tuberculosis (as a second-line drug)
ï Must be prescribed and dosed by a healthcare provider.
Usual dose: 15 mg/kg/day
Given as once-daily or divided every 12 hours (e.g., 7.5 mg/kg q12h)
Route: Intramuscular (IM) or Intravenous (IV) injection or infusion
Typically: 1520 mg/kg/day, divided into 2 or 3 doses
Lower doses and extended intervals due to immature renal function
Usually 710 days depending on infection severity and clinical response
Monitor serum creatinine, urine output, and sometimes amikacin levels (peak and trough) to avoid toxicity
Nephrotoxicity: Risk of kidney damage monitor renal function closely
Ototoxicity: Can cause hearing loss or balance issues (especially in long-term or high doses)
Neuromuscular blockade: Caution in patients with myasthenia gravis or concurrent neuromuscular blockers
Contraindicated in:
Known hypersensitivity to aminoglycosides
Caution in patients with renal impairment
Common:
Pain at injection site
Nausea, rash
Serious:
Kidney damage
Hearing loss (can be permanent)
Dizziness, tinnitus (early signs of ototoxicity)
