Clarithromycin Tablets 500 mg is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is a semi-synthetic derivative of erythromycin and is effective against various gram-positive, gram-negative, and atypical pathogens.
Clarithromycin exerts its antibacterial effect by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. This action is primarily bacteriostatic, but it may be bactericidal at higher concentrations or against highly susceptible organisms.

Clarithromycin is well absorbed after oral administration, with a bioavailability of about 50%, which increases with food. It is extensively distributed throughout body tissues and fluids and is metabolized in the liver to its active metabolite, 14-hydroxy clarithromycin, which also possesses antimicrobial activity. Peak plasma levels are reached within 2 to 3 hours.
