Product Description

Azithromycin Tablets IP 500 mg is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic belonging to the azalide subclass. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, particularly those affecting the respiratory tract, skin, soft tissues, and certain sexually transmitted infections.

Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby blocking the translocation steps in protein elongation. This action is primarily bacteriostatic, though it may be bactericidal against susceptible organisms at higher concentrations.

Each film-coated tablet contains:

• Azithromycin IP ï 500 mg

Pharmacokinetics:

Azithromycin is rapidly absorbed and widely distributed throughout the body, achieving high tissue concentrations. It has a long half-life, allowing for once-daily dosing and short treatment durations. The drug is excreted mostly unchanged in bile, with a small amount in urine.

Indications:

• Acute bacterial pharyngitis and tonsillitis

• Acute bacterial sinusitis

• Community-acquired pneumonia and bronchitis

• Skin and soft tissue infections

• Uncomplicated genital infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae

• Otitis media

• Travelerïs diarrhea (caused by E. coli)

• Typhoid fever (off-label in some regions)
