What is Ofloxacin OZ?

Ofloxacin OZ is a combination antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial and protozoal infections, especially gastrointestinal and urogenital infections. It contains:

1. Ofloxacin “ a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase, preventing bacterial replication.

2. Ornidazole “ a nitroimidazole derivative effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa (like Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, etc.).

Together, they provide broad-spectrum antimicrobial coverage.

Mechanism of Action:

• Ofloxacin: Bactericidal; inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV “ enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication.

• Ornidazole: Causes DNA strand breakage in anaerobic microorganisms and protozoa, leading to cell death.

Uses / Indications:

Ofloxacin OZ is commonly used for:

• Acute diarrheal diseases (especially with suspected mixed infections)

• Amoebic dysentery

• Giardiasis

• Infectious colitis

• Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

• Urinary tract infections

• Gynecological infections

• Dental infections

Dosage (Typical):

• Adults: One tablet twice daily after meals, or as prescribed by a physician.

• Children: Use pediatric formulation and dose per body weight (if applicable).

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to fluoroquinolones or nitroimidazoles

• History of tendon disorders associated with fluoroquinolones

• Seizure disorders

• Pregnancy and breastfeeding (use only if clearly needed and prescribed)

Side Effects:

Common:

• Nausea

• Metallic taste

• Dizziness

• Headache

• Abdominal discomfort

Serious (rare):

• Tendon rupture

• Seizures

• QT prolongation

• Allergic reactions

• Peripheral neuropathy

Precautions:

• Avoid alcohol during and for at least 48 hours after taking Ornidazole (risk of disulfiram-like reaction)

• Use with caution in patients with epilepsy or neurological disorders

• Not recommended in children unless prescribed

• Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight (photosensitivity with ofloxacin)
