Clarithromycin Tablets 250 mg is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is a semi-synthetic derivative of erythromycin and exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, particularly effective against respiratory tract pathogens and certain atypical bacteria.
Clarithromycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby blocking the translocation of peptides. This action inhibits bacterial growth and multiplication, making it a bacteriostatic agent, although it can be bactericidal at higher concentrations or against highly susceptible organisms.

Clarithromycin is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and extensively distributed in body tissues. It undergoes first-pass metabolism in the liver, where it is converted to an active metabolite, 14-hydroxy clarithromycin, which also has antimicrobial activity. Peak plasma concentrations are typically reached within 2 to 3 hours after oral administration.
