This is a broad-spectrum antibiotic suspension used primarily in pediatric patients to treat bacterial infections. The combination enhances antibacterial efficacy, especially against resistant organisms.
Amoxycillin (as Amoxycillin Trihydrate)
Class: Beta-lactam antibiotic (Penicillin group)
Action: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, causing bacterial death.
Effective Against: Streptococcus, Staphylococcus (non-MRSA), H. influenzae, E. coli, etc.
Potassium Clavulanate (Clavulanic Acid)
Class: Beta-lactamase inhibitor
Action: Inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria, allowing Amoxycillin to work effectively.
Important Because: Many bacteria are resistant to Amoxycillin alone; clavulanate restores its activity.
Used to treat bacterial infections such as:
Tonsillitis / Pharyngitis
Sinusitis
Otitis media (ear infection)
Lower respiratory tract infections (bronchitis, pneumonia)
Urinary tract infections (UTI)
Skin and soft tissue infections
Dental infections
Formulated as dry powder for reconstitution (must be mixed with water before use).
Typical strengths (per 5 mL):
125 mg Amoxycillin + 31.25 mg Clavulanic acid
200 mg + 28.5 mg
250 mg + 62.5 mg
400 mg + 57 mg (often used in older children)
Based on body weight (usually 2040 mg/kg/day of Amoxycillin, divided every 8 or 12 hours).
Exact dose and duration depend on infection severity, childs weight, and doctors judgment.
Administer after food to improve absorption and reduce GI upset.
Complete the full course, even if symptoms improve early.
Not effective against viral infections (like colds or flu).
Use caution in patients with penicillin allergy.
Adjust dose in renal impairment.
May cause diarrhea or yeast infections due to altered gut flora.
Diarrhea (often mild, but report persistent cases)
Nausea, vomiting
Rash or itching
Rarely: allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, angioedema)
