Piperacillin is a broad-spectrum extended-spectrum penicillin antibiotic, and Tazobactam is a β-lactamase inhibitor. The combination extends piperacillins effectiveness by protecting it from enzymatic degradation by β-lactamase-producing bacteria.
This combination is used to treat serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including resistant strains.
Each vial contains a fixed-dose combination, commonly:
Piperacillin Sodium: 4 g
Tazobactam Sodium: 0.5 g
(Also available in other ratios like 2g/0.25g or 3g/0.375g depending on product)
Usually supplied as a powder for reconstitution for IV infusion.
Effective against a wide range of infections, including:
Complicated intra-abdominal infections
Complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Skin and soft tissue infections
Pneumonia (including hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated)
Sepsis and bacteremia
Gynecological infections
Bone and joint infections
Adult dose:
Usually 4.5 g (4 g Piperacillin + 0.5 g Tazobactam) every 6 to 8 hours
Dosage and frequency may vary with infection severity and renal function
Pediatric dose:
Dosing based on weight; often 80 mg/kg of Piperacillin component every 68 hours
Route: Intravenous infusion over 30 to 60 minutes (slow infusion)
Reconstitution:
Reconstitute with sterile water for injection or 0.9% Sodium Chloride solution
Dilute further in 100 mL or more of IV fluids (NS or Dextrose 5%) for infusion
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to penicillins, β-lactam antibiotics, or tazobactam
Precautions:
Use cautiously in patients with a history of penicillin allergy
Adjust dose in renal impairment
Monitor for signs of superinfection
Prolonged use may result in Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea
