Ceftriaxone is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is widely used to treat serious bacterial infections.
Each vial contains:
Ceftriaxone Sodium equivalent to 1 g or 250 mg or 500 mg (depending on vial size)
Usually supplied as a sterile powder for reconstitution.
Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
Urinary tract infections
Skin and soft tissue infections
Bone and joint infections
Meningitis
Gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted infections
Intra-abdominal infections
Septicemia and bacteremia
Surgical prophylaxis
Adults:
Typical dose: 12 g IV or IM once daily
Maximum dose: 4 g/day (divided doses if necessary)
Children:
5075 mg/kg/day (max 2 g/day) in one or two divided doses
Route:
Intravenous (IV) infusion or Intramuscular (IM) injection
IM injection should be given deep into a large muscle mass (e.g., gluteal)
Reconstitution:
With sterile water or suitable diluent for injection
For IV: Dilute in 1040 mL of compatible IV fluids (e.g., 0.9% NS or 5% Dextrose) and infuse over 30 minutes
For IM: Reconstitute with 1% lidocaine (without epinephrine) for pain relief
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillins
Neonates with hyperbilirubinemia or prematurity (risk of bilirubin displacement)
Concurrent calcium-containing IV solutions in neonates (<28 days)
Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment
Monitor for signs of superinfection
Prolonged use may lead to fungal or bacterial overgrowth
Avoid mixing with calcium-containing solutions in neonates (risk of precipitates)
