Mefenamic Acid and Paracetamol Suspension is a combination pediatric syrup or oral suspension commonly prescribed for the management of fever and mild to moderate pain in children.
Mefenamic Acid
Class: Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID)
Action: Reduces inflammation, pain, and fever by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.
Used For: Pain relief, particularly in inflammatory conditions like toothaches, earaches, musculoskeletal pain.
Paracetamol (Acetaminophen)
Class: Analgesic and Antipyretic
Action: Reduces fever and relieves pain by acting on the hypothalamic heat-regulating center and inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the CNS.
Used For: Fever, headaches, mild to moderate pain.
Fever of various origins (viral or bacterial)
Headache
Toothache
Earache
Muscle pain
Post-vaccination fever
Mild to moderate inflammatory pain
Dosage is usually based on weight and prescribed by a pediatrician.
For example:
Mefenamic Acid: 46 mg/kg/dose every 8 hours
Paracetamol: 1015 mg/kg/dose every 46 hours
Important: Never exceed the maximum daily dose of Paracetamol (usually 60 mg/kg/day in children).
Use with caution in children under 6 months.
Avoid in children with peptic ulcers, kidney issues, or known NSAID allergy.
Prolonged use can lead to gastritis, liver toxicity (from Paracetamol), or kidney issues.
Should not be combined with other NSAIDs or Paracetamol-containing products to avoid overdose.
