Each tablet typically contains:
Telmisartan ï an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB)
Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) ï a thiazide diuretic
Common strengths:
Telmisartan 40 mg + Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg
Telmisartan 80 mg + Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg
Telmisartan 80 mg + Hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg
(IP = Indian Pharmacopoeia standard)
Treatment of essential hypertension
Used when monotherapy with Telmisartan or HCTZ alone does not adequately control blood pressure
Reduces risk of stroke, heart failure, and kidney problems associated with hypertension
Telmisartan: Blocks angiotensin II receptors ï relaxes blood vessels, reduces blood pressure
Hydrochlorothiazide: Increases urine output (diuresis) by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the distal tubules ï reduces blood volume and pressure
Common:
Dizziness or light-headedness
Fatigue
Increased urination
Electrolyte imbalance (e.g., low potassium, low sodium)
Muscle cramps
Serious (rare):
Severe hypotension
Kidney dysfunction
High blood uric acid (may worsen gout)
Allergic reactions
Hypersensitivity to Telmisartan, HCTZ, or sulfonamide-derived drugs
Severe renal or hepatic impairment
Anuria (inability to produce urine)
Pregnancy (especially 2nd and 3rd trimesters ï contraindicated)
Blood pressure
Electrolytes (especially sodium, potassium)
Renal function (serum creatinine, BUN)
Blood glucose (HCTZ may increase levels)
Uric acid (especially in gout patients)
Take at the same time every day, preferably in the morning (due to diuretic effect)
Stay hydrated
Avoid alcohol and excessive salt
Donït stop medication abruptly
Use potassium-rich foods only if advised (HCTZ can lower potassium, but Telmisartan can increase it)
